What is the first thing you do after waking up? First you check with whom you slept this night and/or look through the window. Just to see what is the weather outside, who is scavenging your rubbish or to count how many cars are still in your yard in order to know how many neighbors don’t have a permanent job. Then what? Coffee from the same cup, sandwiches with the same favorite bread, the same way (the shortest) to your working place, same shop to buy something for lunch and so on. Monotony. Is it good or bad? Let’s ask Google. When I hit "monotony is good" I got 47.900 sites discussing this theme. When I hit "monotony is bad" I see 10.900. To sum up, “monotony is good” is a more popular theme between internet users. Quite surprising, yes? Word “monotony” is often used in a negative sense, so we need to see, what monotony proponents has to say. First of all, they argue that if there is only one way of doing things, then people develop habits and feel secure and in control. If there are too many choices, it is difficult to teach, and difficult to use because you have to decide how you will do something.
Monotony is not a bad thing, because it makes you want to seek change and new challenges. We all came here to Romania seeking a change in our lives; maybe some of us were running away from monotony we had in our countries. So the worst thing what you can imagine is to find monotony here, in a country, which supposed to help you run away. But monotony is a thing, related to comfort. Once you find yourself in a good apartment with tasty food, nice people and familiar surroundings, soon you understand that it’s not enough. You feel bored of it and in some moment comes realization that you are not developing anymore, just sitting and watching your life passing by. We can see monotony as an endless Sunday, which you spend lying in your bed. It’s warm and cozy, but you know that your life doesn’t end here. The decision to leave the bed, to break the monotony is a challenge. Sometimes a challenge is so little, you would barely give it this name: to pass a night in a wild forest, to hitchhike a car, to feed the stray dogs or just start jogging. Everything is in your hands. But others also have hands and they can help you to break the monotony. Usually it happens in the most unexpected way. Just one person saying that you can do more, you can have a challenge and change things into better is enough to kill monotony, if you believe in her/him. Monotony is often a turning point in our life, meaning that a change is coming. Day always comes after a night.
