ARAD - The Micalaca volleyball team continues to build momentum as they prepare for the MICLE (Micalaca Champions League) tournament, scoring decisive and convincing three-set victory over Alfa/Confecti Team April 5 at the Micalaca Riverside Fieldhouse. The Micalacas are sitting on a 13-5 record (8-3 within conference), with 10 game remaining on their regular season schedule.
The Micalacas dominated throughout, winning the first set. 25-6, the second set 25-12 and the third set 25-18. At no point was the match in jeopardy for the Micalacas, who got strong performances from Emad Sa’eed (the “Sexy Jordan”), Triin Suup (the “Estonian Spartach”), and setter Antonia Wagner (the “Austrian Elegance”) in the victory. Emad Sa’ade and Dainius Daubaras (the “Lithuanian Tower”) were perfect throughout the match on kill attempts, a feat which their coach, Eve Arm (the “Second Best Estonian Player”), described as, “phenomenal.”
“I’m very confident in this group,” said Eve Arm after the match. “They’re getting it together, and I’m looking forward (to the state tournament). I’m very proud of this team, and grateful for the coaching staff I have around me. Also, the girls’ volleyball team has been great in their support of the boys’ team. There is a very communal feel between the two teams.” The “Sexy Jordan” also echoed the sentiments of his coach.
“I’m real happy with where we’re at right now. I think if we keep playing like this, we can go deep into the playoffs. But,” the Sexy Jordan also added, “It’s not going to be a cakewalk. For us, it’s all going to start with teamwork and practice.”
The collective effort has been outstanding all year from the volleyball team. And it would be unwise to ignore the accomplishments of other key members of the team.
“Mariangela (the “Italian Giant”) has been a big part of this team,” Triin-Spartach Suup said. “She has a team-high 156 stuff blocks. Magda (the “Happiest Polish Girl”) has also done really well this year. And our 2nd setter, Sabine Admine (the “Latvian Coach-Surfer ), doesn’t get enough credit either due to her temporary departure”
Suup a team captain, is often overlooked because her job as setter is to create opportunities for other players. Indeed, she is volleyball’s answer to football’s offensive line: The better she plays, the less noticeable she is.
“If everything is perfect,” Triin Suup said, “the hitter will get the kill, and to the average fan, he gets all the credit. But to someone who knows the game, they will be able to tell how good the setter is.”
The Micalacas conclude their regular season Saturday, July 10, at home against Alfa/Confecti team. The match will begin at 4 p.m. Anyone looking for upcoming playoff information may refer to www.micalacablocCsports.net or call the Micalaca Athletic Hotline at 0734194373.
